About the SCPJ Project
The SCPJ Project is the popular name for the "Copyright management project (SCPJ Project 3) relating to open access and self archiving", and is a CSI project (territory 3) commissioned by the National Institute of Informatics from 2010 to 2012.- 1. Mission To promote the registration of papers published in academic journals with institutional repositories.
- 2. Overview of Activities
- Investigating academic societies' policies relating to open access (OA policies).
- Creating and publishing a "Society Copyright Policies Database" (SCPJ Database) based on the results of our investigations.
- Operating an individual consultancy relating to OA policies that target societies.
- 3. Management structure
- Lead institution: Univ. of Tsukuba
- Contributing institution:Chiba Univ., Tokyo Institute of Technology., Kobe Univ.
- 4. Background of activities
- What are institutional repositories?
- Institutional repositories are libraries provided online to assemble, archive and store intellectual products such as research institutions' research findings. Motivated by the rising price of academic journals, repositories have been established as a measure to realize a new "open access" (OA) academic information distribution model that attempts to return the distribution of research findings to the academic community.
- Researchers who have authored academic papers may register any of their papers with the institutional repository they belong to, and by archiving it for no cost, they can expand access to their research findings and increase its impact.
- Registering a paper published in an academic journal with institutional repositories
- Out of all the different types of copyright, it is necessary to obtain the permission of copyright holders when it comes to reproduction and public transmission rights. In many cases, these have been transferred from the author to the society or publisher of the journal, so authors (and institutional repository managers) will have to refer to the society or publisher every time they want to exercise such rights.
- SCPJ has societies declare their policies (whether they give permission for institutional repositories to archive articles) relating to OA, which are then added to a database and publicized. Authors (and institutional repository managers) are then able to easily confirm this information with societies, reducing the workload for societies.
What is the SCPJ database?
A database from which you can search for the OA policies of societies in Japan. It has the following characteristics.- 1. Based on the results of a survey aimed at the approximate 2,100 societies in Japan. Based on the results of a questionnaire relating to OA policies aimed at virtually all of the approximate 2,100 societies in Japan (consisting of groups and Science Council of Japan collaborative research groups listed in the "2007-2009 Edition of the Academic Societies Directory").
- 2. Lists OA policies of the approximate 2,100 societies in Japan. Allows users to briefly survey how societies in Japan are responding to OA by providing data concerning those societies that answered "Undecided on OA policy" or those that have not answered, which could be regarded as another type of "policy".
